The Hinds Community College football team traveled to Senatobia hoping to stay undefeated on the young season, but came away empty handed, falling 23-0 to Northwest Community College on Thursday night.
Northwest quarterback Casey Weston was tremendous through the air, finishing 31-for-38 with 284 yards and three touchdowns. One of Weston’s rare miscues was a goal-line interception by Hinds’ David Lindsey of Flowood, a sophomore defensive back, just before halftime.
The Rangers (2-0) got on the board in the early going when Weston found Xavier Lee for a six-yard touchdown pass. Kevin Buford missed the point after to give Northwest a 6-0 lead with 5:10 left in the first quarter.
After numerous stops by the Hinds defense throughout the first half, the score remained 6-0 until the break.
With 7:34 left in the third quarter, Weston connected with Otis Mays on an eight-yard route in the endzone. The pair would hook up again on the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 Northwest.
Northwest would then capitalize after a Hinds fumble on the ensuing kickoff, scoring five plays later when Weston and Marquise Green connected on a four-yard route for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, giving the Rangers a 20-0 lead with 4:49 in the third quarter.
Buford would add a 37-yard field goal late in the final quarter to complete the scoring at 23-0.
Anton Taylor of Jackson, a sophomore running back, finished with 43 yards on 13 carries to pace the Hinds offense.
Hinds (1-1) will play its first home game of the 2009 season next Thursday, welcoming East Central Community College to Raymond. Kickoff will start at 6:30 p.m.
