Les Lemons of Vicksburg, a freshman quarterback, and Treyvias Alexander of Breaux Bridge, La., a sophomore wide receiver, were a perfect combination all evening for the Hinds Community College Eagles on Thursday night, as Hinds (2-1) defeated East Central Community College, 30-7, in the 2009 home opener for Hinds.

Lemons found Alexander on numerous occasions, most notably a 19-yard strike with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter, to pace the Eagles offense.

The Warriors of East Central (1-2) were the first to get on the board as quarterback Emmanuel Taylor and wide receiver Jeremy Harvey connected on a 16-yard touchdown. A Chad Mangum PAT gave East Central a 7-0 lead with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

Lemons would get Hinds on the board with just under 10 minutes left in the second half with a seven-yard TD run. A bad snap on the point after made it a 7-6 contest with East Central in the lead.

Jared Thames of Vicksburg, a freshman kicker, drilled a 30-yard field goal with just over two minutes to go in the first half to give Hinds a 9-7 lead, one in which they would never relinquish.

Lemons’ game would continue to progress after the half, as he found Wesley Mounger of Clinton, a sophomore wide receiver, on a 59-yard TD strike with 11:48 left in the third quarter. A Thames point after pushed the Hinds lead to 16-7.

The Lemons-to-Alexander combination would give Hinds a 23-7 lead in the fourth, but the Eagles were not done yet. Patrick Durr of Brandon, a freshman running back, would provide the finishing touches with a four-yard TD run with 0:43 left in the final quarter. Thames’ point after finalized the scoring at 30-7.

Lemons was 18-of-23 passing with 235 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran a score in to contribute on three of the four Hinds touchdowns. Alexander hauled in seven catches for 135 yards and a score.

Hinds will now hit the road and head to Poplarville to face Pearl River Community College next Thursday. The Eagles and Wildcats will tangle in a 6:30 contest.
