Special teams play was the answer that Jones County Junior College was looking for on Thursday night, as it propelled the Bobcats to a 27-0 victory over Hinds Community College in Ellisville.
Jones (3-2 overall, 3-0 in the South division) blocked two Hinds punts and took them in for touchdowns, and kicker Jacob Chancellor drilled a 37-yard and 22-yard field goal to lead the Bobcats to a key divisional win.
Haden Cox recovered a blocked punt and ran six yards to the house with just over two minutes to go until halftime, and Ramon Blakeney matched his teammate with an eight-yard touchdown on another blocked Hinds punt early in the fourth quarter.
The lone offensive touchdown for Jones came when Bubba Brown scampered in from three yards out with six seconds to go in the first quarter. Chancellor’s PAT gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead, one in which they would never give up.
Hinds (2-3 overall, 1-2 in the South division) had an opportunity to get on the board with 27.8 seconds to go in the game, but were stopped on fourth and goal by Jones.
Wesley Mounger of Clinton, a sophomore wide receiver, led Hinds with two catches for 21 yards.
The Eagles return home next Thursday to take on Southwest Community College in a 6:30 matchup. If you cannot make it out to Raymond, you can catch the live streaming version of the game on the Hinds athletic Web site.
