Hinds Community College returned to the gridiron on Thursday night looking for a much needed victory against the Southwest Community College Bears. The Bears came away with the victory, however, defeating the Eagles, 35-19.
Wesley Mounger (Clinton) returned to the quarterback position for Hinds (2-4 overall, 1-3 in the South) after starting all nine games as a freshman. He got the Eagles on the board with a 20-yard touchdown run with 6:49 left in the first quarter. Jared Thames (Vicksburg) added the point after to give Hinds a 7-0 lead.
Martee Tenner did not Hinds sit on the lead for long, however, as he ripped off a 33-yard touchdown run 41 seconds later. Brandon Thomas added a point after to tie the game at seven apiece.
Stanley Jennings gave Southwest (3-3 overall, 2-2 in the South) the lead to stay later in the first quarter, connecting with Antonio Wyche for a 25-yard touchdown pass. The Thomas PAT gave the Bears a 14-7 lead.
Anton Taylor (Jackson) would return the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to cut the Southwest lead to 14-13 after the Thames point was no good.
Mandarian Martin gave Southwest a 21-13 lead after his five-yard touchdown run and a Thomas point after to give the Bears an eight-point lead at the half.
Jennings would strike with his receiving corps again, this time drilling a 31-yard touchdown strike to Darren Arline. A Thomas point after gave Southwest a 28-19 lead with 1:31 left in the third quarter.
The final score of the game for Southwest would come on a one-yard touchdown run by Jennings. The Thomas point after finalized the scoring at 35-19.
Eric Williams (Jackson) had two interceptions and Robert Jones (Laurel) picked off a pass as well to pace Hinds' defense.
Hinds will return to Joe Renfroe Stadium next Thursday, welcoming Itawamba Community College for the school’s annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
