Wesley Mounger of Clinton had an outstanding night on Thursday, completing 10 of 17 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns in leading Hinds Community College to a non-division victory over the Itawamba Community College Indians, 31-16.
Mounger, who was in his second start of 2009 as the Eagles quarterback, connected with Jerrell White of Dinwiddie, Va., for a 23-yard touchdown strike and Jared Thames of Vicksburg added the point after to give Hinds a 7-0 lead with 7:21 in the first quarter.
A 41-yard field goal by Thames briefly into the second quarter put Hinds ahead, 10-0. Mounger didn’t waste time advancing the Eagles lead, hooking up with Cordell Valentine of Vicksburg on a 68-yard touchdown pass. Thames would add the point after to give Hinds a 17-0 lead going into the halftime.
Bret Jeffcoat of Itawamba was a one man show all night for the Indians, scoring on a nine-yard run and adding the point after himself to cut the Hinds lead to 17-7 with 11:47 in the third quarter.
Anton Taylor of Jackson would later get Hinds back on the board with a one-yard touchdown leap. Thames’ PAT would put Hinds up 24-7.
Jeffcoat would do his best to bring the Indians back, hitting Garrian Heard on a 50-yard touchdown pass. The Jeffcoat PAT brought the score to 24-14.
Robert Jones of Laurel would put the proverbial dagger in the heart of the Indians, however, returning an 84-yard interception for a touchdown. The Thames PAT pushed the Hinds lead to 31-14.
A late safety by Itawamba completed the scoring at 31-16.
Leon Mackey of Wilmington, Del., had a monster night defensively for the Eagles, collecting three sacks to push his state lead to 10 sacks.
