The Hinds Community College football program will be well represented in the 2009 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-Star football game, as eight Eagles have been selected to play in the contest.
The annual event will be held on Saturday at Keenum Stadium on the campus of Northeast Community College in Booneville. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Although the game will be played hours from home, the Hinds players will see familiar faces on the sideline, as the entire HCC coaching staff will coach the South squad.
Treyvias Alexander (Breaux Bridge, La.), Wesley Mounger (Clinton), Demetrius Bryant (Jackson), Bobby McGowan (Utica), Mark Weathersby (Magee), Chance Starkweather (Richland), Dishon Robertson (Brownsville, Tenn.) and Cordarrell Smith (Jackson) are the eight student-athletes that will represent Hinds in the All-Star event.
Alexander, who was named to the All-State second team recently, had an excellent sophomore campaign, catching 30 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns.
Mounger, who split time at wide receiver and quarterback, was the Eagles most versatile player as a sophomore. He hauled in 17 catches for 253 yards and one touchdown as a receiver, while also throwing for 485 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles backup quarterback.
Bryant was a force at linebacker for Hinds in 2009, as he finished with 52 tackles (51 solos, one assist), caused two fumbles, had two sacks and blocked a kick for the Eagles.
McGowan was a nightmare in the middle for opposing offenses, as the sophomore linebacker had 76 tackles (67 solos, nine assists) to lead the Hinds defense. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown and collected a sack.
Weathersby and Starkweather were virtual walls on the ends of the Eagles offensive line, as both spent time at tight end in the Hinds two-tight end offensive set.
Robertson had an outstanding season on the Hinds defensive line, as the Tennessee native collected 56 tackles (52 solos, four assists). He also intercepted a pass, caused a fumble and picked up four sacks on the season.
Smith also provided strength to the defensive line of Hinds, as he finished with 32 tackles (29 solos, three assists) as a sophomore. He collected three sacks, one blocked kick and one recovered fumble.
As mentioned earlier, the Hinds coaching staff of Gene Murphy (head coach), Dwayne Curry (defensive line), Ben Dew (offensive line), Reginald Dillon (running backs), Thadeus Jackson (strength and conditioning), Dot Murphy (wide receivers), Kelly Murphy (quarterbacks), Larry Williams (defensive coordinator) and Dwike Wilson (secondary) will serve as the coaches for the South team.
