The men’s soccer team traveled to Meridian Community College over the weekend to compete in the Rush Invitational Tournament and had success against two tough out-of-state opponents.
On Saturday, the Eagles defeated Gordon College (Ga.), 3-0, and tied Concordia College (Ala.), 1-1, on Friday.
In Saturday’s contest against Gordon College, the Eagles, who outshot Gordon 19-1, received first half goals from Parker Ware of Brandon and James Hoye of Canton.
Ware would add another goal in the second half and John Wixson of Pearl earned the shutout in goal.
“It was good to see the guys working hard as a team and earning a valuable win,” said Hinds coach Doug Williams.
In Friday’s action, Hinds took a 1-0 lead in the first half over Concordia, a four-year school in Selma, Ala., when Marcelo Lima of Fortaleza, Brazil, assisted Dillon Walker of Pearl, who scored from the top of the box.
Late in the first half, Concordia was able to score on a cross that was finished at the far post. In overtime both teams created chances to score and Hinds was awarded a penalty kick that it failed to finish.
“Both teams played hard and had chances to win the game,” said Williams. “It is disappointing to tie when you have the chance to win.”
Hinds (7-4-1) will return to the field on Wednesday, traveling to Senatobia to face Northwest Community College in a 4 p.m. tilt.
