10/25/09

The fans gathered at Tom Shepherd Field in Raymond on Sunday night were treated to an emotional, see-saw battle between perennial men’s soccer powers Hinds Community College and Miss. Gulf Coast Community College.

The visitors from the Coast came away on the winning end, as the Bulldogs defeated the Eagles of Hinds, 3-2, in the second overtime period to claim the 2009 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state tournament.

The loss ends the season for Hinds, which finished with a 10-6-1 overall record.

Marcelo Lima of Fortaleza, Brazil, and Patrick Parker of Vicksburg both contributed goals on Sunday night for Hinds.

Lima’s goal was his ninth of the season, while it was the first of the year for Parker, who also doubled as the punter for the Hinds football team.

Hinds advanced to Sunday’s final with a 2-1 win over Jones County Junior College in first round action on Saturday. Dillon Walker of Pearl and Austin Cole of Brandon were the two Eagles that found the back of the net to push Hinds to the finals.

It was the team-leading 10th goal for Walker, the Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year as a Pearl High School senior last season. The goal for Cole was his seventh.

Lima led the Eagles in scoring on the season, finishing with 27 points behind nine goals and nine assists.

Walker finished just behind him with 25 total points, coming on 10 goals and five assists.
