Willie Calvin of Greenville, a Hinds Community College men's track signee, was recently named Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the state of Mississippi.

The award is given to the top male and female track and field athlete in all 50 states.

Calvin, an All-State selection by The Clarion-Ledger, was the Class 5A state champion in the high jump (6 feet, 8 inches) and the long jump (23-9 ¼ ).

His long jump was the best at the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) state meet this year.
