The Lady Eagles soccer team has played the role of road warriors lately, and has come out on the other end a better team, although the results are not what the team originally desired.
Hinds (5-7) split a two-game set at Meridian Community College over the weekend, beating Gordon College (Ga.), 5-0, but losing to Polk Community College (Fla.), 7-0.
The Lady Eagles also dropped a 3-2 contest to Union University (Tenn.) last Wednesday.
The game with Gordon College on Friday was dominated by the Webb sisters of Brandon, as Melanie Webb scored three goals and Rachel Webb assisted on two goals. The game’s other two goals were scored by Brittany Griggs of Clinton and Deslyn Langaigne of Victoria, Grenada.
Griggs also captured an assist on the game. Lauren Sipes of Pearl earned the shutout in goal with one save and no goals allowed.
On Saturday, number two ranked Polk was too much for the Lady Eagles, as Polk won 7-0. Polk got off to an early bang, scoring five goals in the first half.
“I made some changes to the defense in the second half which proved to be a better fit against Polk,” said Hinds coach Kori Babb. “The team gave me a much better effort in the second half than in the first. We learned a lot about our team during this game.”
In last week’s contest against Union, Hinds had a 2-1 halftime lead, but could not hold on. Union was able to counter with two goals in the second half victory to come out on top.
Griggs and Jessie Dotson of Byram scored both goals for the Lady Eagles, while Sipes manned the goal with eight saves and three goals scored against.
Starting keeper Lindsay Gilmore of Pearl has a sprained ankle with fractured bones in the ankle. Babb is unsure of how long Gilmore will be out.
Hinds will stay on the road for its next contest, traveling to Senatobia to face Northwest Community College. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
