The Utica Campus, as part of Hinds Community College (formerly Utica Junior College — UJC), has a long history of serving the Utica community. Utica Junior College was founded in 1903 by William Henry Holtzclaw as Utica Normal and Industrial School for the Training of Colored Young Men and Young Women, then later became Utica Normal and Industrial Institute and Utica Junior College. It is the oldest of the six campuses of the Hinds Community College District (HCCD). UJC merged with the HCCD in 1982 but retains its Historically Black College & University (HBCU) designation and bulldog mascot for the basketball teams.
The campus offers a full schedule of academic, career and technical courses. The campus also offers hybrid (combined classroom and online instruction) courses to meet many of the changing student needs. Tutors are available at no charge and offer assistance in English and Math. Specialized programming such as Title III and ABE/GED offers students additional opportunities for education. Student Support Services, and other TRIO programs are available to assist students while enrolled.
High school students can get ahead through dual enrollment or dual credit courses by enrolling in Hinds Community College courses while still in high school. Check with a High School or Hinds counselor for more information.
Students enjoy a small residential campus environment with opportunity for involvement in Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government, FBLA, SkillsUSA, and other campus organizations. Computer access is available campus wide with WIFI nodes located strategically around the campus.
