Softball Picks up Four Wins in the JUCO Classic

VICKSBURG, Miss. –  The Hinds Community College Softball team headed to Vicksburg to compete in the JUCO Classic at Sports Force Parks. The Lady Eagles played four teams Feb. 23-24 and returned home boasting a four-game winning streak. With the sweep, Hinds improved to 8-6 overall. 
 
Game One – Hinds 8, Metropolitan CC 1
 
Metropolitan jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, nut the Lady Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to bring the score to 3-1 after one complete inning. Hinds tacked on another run in the second and two runs in the third to take the 6-1 lead after three innings. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lady Eagles score two more insurance runs to bring the score to 8-1. Hinds went on to take game one of the Juco Classic by a final score of 8-1.
 
Alexis Moran and Emily Vines had three hits in the contest, while Andreya Garrett totaled two hits and a team-high three RBI. Taylor Nelson had the only homerun of the game to give the Lady Eagles a win to start the JUCO Classic. Kyleigh Forsyth earned the start and win in the circle as she went five innings and struck out five. Emily Vicknair came in relief, struck out two batters, and only allowed one hit through two innings of work in the circle.
 
Game Two – Hinds 9, #9 Kirkwood 8
 
Kirkwood got an early start in the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first, but the Lady Eagles evened the contest at 2 apiece after one complete inning. After a scoreless second inning, Kirkwood's bats came alive and scored four in the top of the third inning to take the 6-2 lead. Hinds responded well and got three runs back in the bottom of the third to narrow the lead to just one run after three innings. 
 
The Lady Eagles' offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 9-6 lead after four innings. Kirkwood grabbed two runs in the top of the sixth inning but couldn't overcome the deficit as Hinds grabbed the 9-8 victory over the #9 ranked team in the nation.
 
Mellissa Lopera and Emily Vines both had a couple of hits and two RBI in the contest to lead the Lady Eagles to the 9-8 victory. Taylor Nelson and Ellie Williamson also added two RBI in the game. Emily Vines got the start in the circle and went five innings and totaled five strikeouts, while Emily Vicknair went the final two innings and only allowed one hit. 
 
Game Three – Hinds 12, St. Charles 4
 
Hinds got the scoring party started in the bottom of the first inning as they scored three runs to take a 3-0 advantage. SCCC came back in the top of the second inning to take even the contest at 3. Hinds' offense began to take over scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the 8-3 lead. Hinds plated three more runs in the third and one run in the fourth to grab the 12-4 run rule win against St. Charles in five innings.
 
Destiny Crosby and Alexis Moran posted three hits in the game, while Mellissa Lopera and Emily Vines picked up a couple of hits. Additionally, Vines had a team-high 3 RBI in the 12-4 win. Lily Ochodnicky, Mellissa Lopera, Alexis Moran, and Emily Vines all had extra base hits in the game. In the circle, Emily Vines got the start, went 3.2 innings, and grabbed four strikeouts. Emily Vicknair came into the game and only allowed two hits and posted three strikeouts.
 
Game Four – Hinds 13, Coastal Ala. North 4
 
Hinds scored six runs (four in the first and two in the second) to take the 6-0 lead after the first two innings of play. The visitors on the scoreboard cut the deficit in half, but Hinds remained in the lead 6-3 after the top of the third inning. The Lady Eagles' bats exploded in the bottom half of the frame with six runs to take the 12 -3 advantage and put the run-rule in effect. Hinds scored one in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but CACCN grabbed one run in the fifth. The Lady Eagles went on to earn the 13-4 run-rule victory in five innings. 
 
Ellie Williamson and Taylor Nelson each grabbed three RBI in the contest, while Mackenzie Kelly and Mellissa Lopera tallied two RBI. Destiny Crosby also shined at the plate after going 3-3 and scored two runs in the victory. In the circle, Kyleigh Forsyth pitched three innings, allowed only three hits, and struck out four batters to grab the win for the Lady Eagles. Emily Vicknair came in to relieve Forsyth, pitched two innings, and did not give up a hit. 
 
Up Next 
 
The Lady Eagles will return to action against #18 Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala. tomorrow February 27th for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 PM.
