Lady Eagles Sweep Holmes in Final Conference Doubleheader

RAYMOND, Miss. –  The Hinds Community College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Holmes Community College at Rene T. Warren Field on Friday. With the sweep, the Lady Eagles improved to 32-14 overall and 21-7 in conference play. 

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Lady Bulldogs scratched across the first run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Eagles grabbed two runs in the bottom of the third to take the 2-1 advantage. Holmes picked up one run in the top of the fourth to even the contest, but Hinds erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the 7-2 lead. The Lady Eagles and Lady Bulldogs scored three runs apiece for the rest of the game as Hinds grabbed the 10-5 victory in game one. 

Destiny Crosby and Ellie Williamson led the Lady Eagles with three runs apiece, while Taylor Nelson and Mackenzie Kelly tallied a couple of hits in the contest. Olivia Rees, Sara Long, and Melissa Lopera posted a hit apiece in the game. Kyleigh Forsyth got the start and picked up the win for the Lady Eagles after pitching six innings. Emily Vicknair came in relief and pitched the final inning of play as she struck out two batters. 

In the regular season finale, the Lady Eagles opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The next three innings neither team scored, however in the top of the fifth the Lady Bulldogs tied the game up at 2. The game didn't stay tied for long as the Lady Eagles plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take regain the lead. Hinds plated three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-2. The Lady Eagles went on to earn the 8-2 victory and grab the sweep over Holmes. Emily Vines got the start and went the distance for the Lady Eagles in the circle. Additionally, she allowed no earned runs and only gave up four hits in seven innings. 

Sara Long picked up three hits in the contest and tallied two RBI, while Taylor Nelson, Ellie Williamson, and Shelby Allen had two hits apiece. Oliva Rees and Mackenzie Kelly were the other Lady Eagles the recorded a hit in the game.

The Lady Eagles will return to action against LSU Eunice on Friday, May 3rd in the Region 23 Tournament in Wesson on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Hinds and LSUE will play in the second game of the tournament at 6 PM in the double elimination tournament.
