Basketball heads into extended break

The hot streak that began the season for the Hinds men's basketball team has continued heading into the long break, as the Bulldogs moved to 8-2 overall (0-1 in the South) after an 86-81 victory over Holmes Community College on Thursday.

The win in Goodman is the final game of the 2012 portion of the schedule, and the Bulldogs will not return to action until a Jan. 7 rematch with Holmes in Utica.

Dominique Brown (Vicksburg) paced Hinds on Thursday night with 18 points, three rebounds and six assists.

Greg Lee (Jackson) trailed Brown with 17 points against Holmes.

On Monday at Meridian Community College, the Bulldogs had four scorers in double digits that led to an 83-54 blowout win over the MCC Eagles.

Matthew Hurn (Meridian) had a huge night in his homecoming of sorts, scoring 21 points, grabbing six rebounds, and finishing with four steals and three assists.

Tremaine Cunningham (Southaven) had 18 points, Marcus Hurn (Meridian) had 12 points and Dominique Brown (Vicksburg) had 10 points to help lead the offensive charge.

The Hinds Community College women's basketball team dropped a 70-43 decision to Holmes Community College in what was the last night game before a month break from game action.

Hinds will not play again until Monday, Jan. 7, when they will welcome Holmes to Utica for a rematch.

The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 1-9 overall and 0-1 in the South division after the setback in Goodman on Thursday.

Marshay Jones (Jackson) led the way with nine points on Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Meridian Community College on Monday night, but were unsuccessful in their bid for a win, falling, 65-53, to the Lady Eagles.

A monster night by Delania Wilson (Union) was not enough to push Hinds through. The freshman forward finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in the losing effort.

Shelley Griffith (Jackson) almost matched her teammate by nearly pulling in a double-double, scoring 14 points and snagging eight boards.
