Bulldogs looking for late season push

The Hinds Community College men's basketball team is nearing the end of the 2012-2013 season, and the Bulldogs are looking to get back on track after dropping their last three ballgames.

Hinds now sits at 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the South division after a 75-69 loss to Southwest Community College on Tuesday evening in Utica. The team now only has eight regular season contests remaining.

Dominique Brown (Vicksburg) led the way on Tuesday night against the Bears of Southwest, finishing with 11 points and two rebounds. Marcus Hurn (Meridian) had 10 points, one rebound and three assists as well in the loss.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs headed up to the Delta to take on Coahoma Community College, but came away empty-handed in a 70-58 non-conference loss.

Hurn led all scorers with 21 points, along with pulling down five rebounds and grabbing a steal. Carlo McDonald (Florence) had a big afternoon as well, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

On Thursday, Jan. 17, Hinds traveled to Ellisville to take on Jones County Junior College in search of a South division victory, but were unable to overcome a 13-point halftime lead, and were dealt an 86-73 loss.

McDonald led Hinds scorers with 16 points and also pulled down four rebounds. Dela Mayers (Oak Grove, La.) had his best game to date as a Bulldog versus Jones, scoring 14 points and finishing with nine rebounds and two steals.

On Monday, Jan. 14, the Bulldogs were able to collect their lone South division win to date, an 81-75 victory over East Central Community College.

Hinds had three double-digit scorers, led by Brown (19 points), Marcus Hurn (18 points) and Matthew Hurn (Meridian, 12 points.)

The Bulldogs of Hinds opened the 2013 slate against Holmes Community College on Monday, Jan. 7 and improved to 2-0 on the season against the rival Bulldogs of Holmes with a narrow 73-71 win.

Brown led all Hinds scorers with 20 points, along with handing out three assists and picking up a steal. Marcus Hurn had 14 points, while Greg Lee (Jackson) had 13 points and McDonald ended the night with 10 points.

Hinds will return to game action on Thursday night, making the short drive to Wesson to face Co-Lin Community College at 8 p.m.
