Bulldogs defeat Meridian on Monday night

The Hinds Community College men's basketball team picked up a narrow 75-73 victory on the road at Meridian Community College on Monday night. The win improved the Bulldogs to 2-6 overall and the team currently sits at 0-1 in the South division.

Dela Mayers (Oak Grove, La.) had a monster night in the two-point victory over Meridian, scoring 18 points, pulling down 12 rebounds and blocking four shots.

JaVorian Lawrence (Greenville) and Derrick Little (Yazoo City) each finished the night with double digit points, scoring 14 points and 13 points, respectively.

Hinds opened South division play on Thursday, Dec. 5, dropping an 85-59 decision to Pearl River Community College. Victor Price (Florence, 11 points) and LaDarrius Drain (Yazoo City, 10 points) led the Bulldogs in scoring during the loss.

Drain led Hinds to their first victory of the season just three days prior to the Pearl River game when the Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to Delgado Community College by defeating the Dolphins, 68-60. The freshman forward led all scorers with 21 points and also pulled down five rebounds.

Clayton Tate (Terry) also had a big night in the first win of the year, scoring 17 points, finishing with six rebounds, dishing out six assists and picking up three steals.

The Bulldogs and Dolphins of Delgado met for the first time this season just one week before the Dec. 2 matchup, but this time it was the Dolphins who got the upper hand, grabbing a 63-53 victory over Hinds. Mayers led all Hinds scorers with 13 points and also grabbed eight rebounds.

Hinds will have one more game before taking an extended break for the Christmas holidays. The Bulldogs will travel to Baton Rouge on Monday, Dec. 17 to take on Baton Rouge Community College at 5 p.m.

The team will then begin the 2014 portion of their schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 7, traveling to Goodman to face Holmes Community College in an 8 p.m. matchup.
