Bulldogs edge Southwest on Thursday

The Hinds Community College men's basketball team defeated Southwest Community College, 81-78, on Thursday night in Utica to claim a pivotal South division victory.

The win was the third in the Bulldogs last four games.

LaDarrius Drain (Yazoo City) was the leading scorer in the contest, pouring in 23 points and pulling down five rebounds. The freshman guard also picked up a steal and an assist.

Kaleb Williams (Edwards) scored 19 points, while Dela Mayers (Oak Grove, La.) and Clayton Tate (Terry) each had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs to the narrow victory.

The lone loss in the last four games, a 90-61 defeat, came at the hands of Jones County Junior College on Monday night in Ellisville. Drain was the top scorer and rebounder for Hinds with 14 points and six rebounds.

Hinds defeated East Central Community College, 61-46, on Thursday, Feb. 6 in Utica.

Mayers was the top performer for both teams on this night, collecting game highs in points (21) and rebounds (nine), to go along with two assists and one steal.

Williams also had a nice night, scoring 17 points and pulling down four rebounds.

The East Central victory came right on the heels of a thrilling 74-73 win over Meridian Community College just three days earlier in Utica.

Mayers was a force again on this night, leading both teams in scoring (31 points) and rebounds (12). The sophomore forward also blocked three shots and picked up a steal and an assist.

Hinds (5-16 overall and 4-8 in the South division) now enters the final week of the 2013-2014 regular season. The Bulldogs will travel to Co-Lin Community College on Monday night at 8 p.m. before hosting Gulf Coast Community College on Thursday night in Utica for the season finale.

The final home game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. at J.D. Boyd Gym on the Utica Campus.
