The No. 11 Hinds Community College Eagles dropped a 38-27 thriller to No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) South division action on Thursday night at Joe Renfroe Stadium in Raymond.

Hinds falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the South with the loss, while the Bulldogs of Gulf Coast improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the South.

The game's final was not indicative of how close the game really was, as Hinds led 27-24 with 4:30 to go until two Gulf Coast touchdowns in the final 18 seconds of the contest pushed the Bulldogs ahead with the 38-27 victory. In addition, the Hinds defense held the Bulldogs to just 208 yards of total offense, including just 55 yards through the air.

Nic Chatman (Bolton) was a force on the defensive side all evening, as the freshman linebacker had 13 tackles, as well as 3.5 tackles for loss.

OJ O'Neal (Fayette) had a big night as well, collecting seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Derrick Dotson (Vicksburg) got the scoring going early on, as the freshman offensive lineman fell on a Hinds fumble in the end zone for the rare lineman touchdown. Mason Sollie (Raymond) added the point after to put Hinds ahead, 7-0, with 8:10 in the opening frame.

Joshua Rowland would get the Bulldogs on the board when his 32-yard field goal was good and cut the Hinds lead to 7-3 with 12:19 in the second quarter.

Gulf Coast would take a 10-7 lead on their next possession when quarterback A.J. Erdely hit Tevaris McCormick on a four-yard touchdown pass with 9:55 to go before half. The Rowland point after was good and the Bulldogs took a 10-7 advantage.

MGCCC running back Chris Robinson would extend the lead to 17-7 with a one-yard plunge for the score with 6:35, but TR Page (Taylorsville) would score on a three-yard touchdown run with just 3:25 left before intermission to cut the Gulf Coast lead to 17-14.

The two teams would move into the break with the score sitting at 17-14 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Hinds would take a 21-17 lead with 7:25 in the third quarter when quarterback Jaquez Parks (Griffin, Ga.) would connect with Javon Wims (Miami, Fla.) on a 19-yard route across the middle of the field for the score. The Sollie PAT was perfect and the Eagles held the slim advantage.

The game of nip-and-tuck would continue when Ge'Vonte Jones scampered in from 15 yards out to put Gulf Coast back ahead, 24-21, after the Rowland point after with 14:35.

Parks and Wims would hook up one more time, this time in the back left corner of the end zone, as a perfect pass and even better snag led to an 11-yard touchdown strike to push the Hinds lead to 27-24 with just 4:30 remaining in the contest.

Hinds seemed to be in control of the action at this point, but an Ederly five-yard touchdown pass to T'Rod Daniels with just 18 seconds left put the Bulldogs ahead, 31-27, after the Rowland point after.

The Eagles still had one more shot on their own 40-yard line, but an interception return of the same distance by Chris Johnson added some insurance and moved the Gulf Coast lead to 38-27 with just five seconds to go.

Wims was a standout on offense yet again, as the sophomore wide receiver finished with eight catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Hinds will return to action next Thursday, traveling to Senatobia to take on Northwest Community College at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
