UTICA- The Hinds Community College Bulldogs basketball team improved their record to 2-1 with last night's (Nov. 8) 94 – 75 win over Coahoma Community College on their home court in J.D. Boyd Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs put on a show in their second MACJC match-up of the season giving them their second 19-point win in a row. The unit from Utica had four guys log double-digit points with
Anthony Johnson (Jackson),
Dontrell McQuarter (Baton Rouge, LA) , and
Stephane Ayangma (Yaounde, Cameroon) leading the way in scoring.
Johnson, the sole sophomore returner from last year's squad, put-up 19 points while knocking down two three-pointers and chipping-in two assists for the Bulldogs. Assistant coach
Jonathan Nevol noted that Johnson "returned to his old self shooting the ball well and playing aggressive like he has in the past." The Bulldogs will certainly look to his leadership as they progress through the season.
McQuarter and Ayangma scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, while ripping down rebounds as well as locking down the painted area defensively for the Bulldogs which had a huge impact on the outcome of the game. Nevol comments, "those two [McQuarter and Ayangma] are a force for us inside. They really controlled the paint defensively and made a huge difference in the game."
On a night where head coach
Yusef Fitzgerald was out due to a family matter,
Jonathan Nevol was able to step-in and lead the team to victory. On the contest, Nevol states, "we executed early in the game and put them [Coahoma] on their heels. We were able to play aggressively, which is our style, and I was proud of the guys' effort. They played together and fought hard."
The Hinds Bulldogs basketball team will need to continue this level of play as they will take on two MACJC opponents in three days. The Bulldogs will face Mississippi Delta Community College in a revenge game on November 10 at 3 p.m. at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium; the Trojans defeated Hinds in the season opener by a slim margin 79 – 83. The team will then face Holmes Community College in Goodman November 12 at 8 p.m.
