SUMMIT – The Hinds Community College Bulldog basketball program captured a crucial 76-67 road victory over the Bears of Southwest Mississippi Community College Thursday night. The win moved the Bulldogs (10-7, 3-5) into a tie with the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves for fourth place in the MACJC South in which Hinds holds the tie-breaker advantage.
The top four teams from both the MACJC North and South division will earn a bid to the MACJC State Tournament following the regular season.
"We need to continue to take it one game at a time as we try and fight to make the state playoffs and the Region XXIII Regional Tournament," said second-year head coach,
Yusef Fitzgerald.
As for last night's victory,
Malik Henry (Terry) led the way for the Bulldogs as he scored 17 points going 6-13 from the field. Henry also added two rebounds, two steals, and led the team with five assists.
Dontrell McQuarter (Baton Rouge, LA),
Peyton Taylor (Cleveland), and
Stephane Ayangma (Cameroon) all scored double-digit points.
"I felt like we had a balanced attack and everyone contributed. We have been short on bodies all year, but it has given a lot of different people opportunities to play which will help us in the long run," added Fitzgerald.
The Bulldogs have six regular season/division games remaining on their schedule. Four of those games are against opponents who are either ahead of them or tied with them in standings.
"As of right now we surpassed our win total from last year with six games left to play," said Fitzgerald.
The Bulldogs next battle will be against Jones College (13-4, 7-1) at home in Utica this upcoming Monday, February 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
