The Hinds Community College Bulldogs men's basketball team used nearly every second of the game clock to down East Central Community College in the second round of the Region 23 playoffs Thursday night.
Sophomore forward
Justyn King, of Plant City, Fla, scored the final points of his 14 for the night on a tip-in with seven seconds left in the contest that sealed a 69-68 win for Hinds. He also finished with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Damerius Wash, of Canton, enjoyed another double-double, with 10 points and 14 rebounds to go with six assists. Sophomore guard
Jordan Johnson, of Memphis, added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard/forward
Dontae Jackson added a double-double of his own, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
"We shot the ball horribly, but we cut those turnovers down and we defended," head coach
Yusef Fitzgerald. "That, plus the Lord was on our side with that tip-in by Justyn. For the fans, it was a great game, for me I almost passed out. These guys have a never-over-til-it's-over mentality. Prayerfully we can clean up some things and get back in our groove offensively. I will take a win any way we can get it, though."
Hinds, now 12-2, hosts the third round of the Region 23 playoffs next Tuesday against Southwest Mississippi Community College. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
