Hinds Athletics Year In Review

Raymond, MS - Marking the first full year with Athletic Director Nathan Werremeyer at the helm, the athletic department went through some changes while still remaining competitive on the field and in the classroom. "It was a great year for me to have the opportunity to implement some small changes here and there to make some initial improvements to better position us for some really big changes in the coming year", according to AD Werremeyer when asked how his first full-year at Hinds was. The changes that are being planned for Hinds Athletics require the right touch and the right amount of time for them to be effective long into the future. Hinds Athletics was able to add three new head coaches to the family since January 2022. Robert Gardner (Men's Soccer), Karlee Nobles (RY-Cheer), and Perry Fletcher (Women's Basketball) took over the reins of their respective sports and are quickly making positive changes with their programs.

The spring semester in 2022 continued the success of the athletic department with trips to the Region XXIII Tournament and multiple NJCAA National Tournaments. It all started off with Indoor Track Nationals for Coach Dillion's squad where Jerrika Ambus was crowned a National Champion. Indoor Track also finished with multiple top-five finishes. That success continued right into outdoor season where Ambus grabbed another national championship, finishing her career with three national championships! Dan Rives baseball squad made a dramatic run at the Region XXIII title against eventual national champ Pearl River but came up short in extra innings. The men's and women's tennis teams also had a tremendous spring season making it all the way to their respective national tournaments in Tuscon Arizona and Tyler Texas! Hinds finished the year with 49 student-athletes being named NJCAA All-Academic.

Along with the success in the classroom and in competition, Hinds Athletics kicked off the Impact Fund and Corporate Partnership Program during the summer which is focused on supporting our student-athletes. The athletic department kicked off both programs in July at an event at Table 100 in Flowood where coaches, alumni, and community members gathered to learn about the programs and their purpose. Since its launch, the Impact Fund has grown by more than $100,000 in just a few short months and the Corporate Partnership Program has welcomed two new corporate partners to the family. With the generous support of alumni, donors, and Hinds Community College administration and facilities team, we were able to complete the following projects:
  • New Concession Stand and Pressbox at Rene Warren Field
  • New Bleachers at Rene Warren Field
  • New Sound System at Rene Warren Field
  • New Sound System at Joe G. Moss Field (Free Upgrade Thanks to Sound & Communications)
  • New Banners Inside Joe Renfroe Stadium
  • New Banners Inside JD Boyd Gymnasium
  • New VIP Tailgate Area at Joe Renfroe Stadium
  • Filled in Old Pool in Mayo Fieldhouse
There are still many projects we still want to accomplish before the 2022-23 academic year is over so please, visit the Impact Fund or Corporate Partnership Program pages to see how you can help! There is still plenty of time until the end of the year to make a contribution! For example, on December 30th, the Impact Fund received a large contribution substantial enough to name and complete the Indoor Multipurpose Facility!

We look forward to what the new year has in store for Hinds Community College and Hinds Athletics so I encourage you to follow us and I hope you consider joining us on this journey to create Champions in the Classroom, in Competition, and in the Community!
