Gene and Dot Murphy to be Inducted into Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame

RAYMOND, Miss. – Gene and Dot Murphy are set to be inducted into the Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame on April 28. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Muse Center on the Rankin Campus in Pearl.

Dot and Gene Murphy represent one of the most accomplished and influential couples in the proud history of Hinds Community College athletics. Across decades of service, their leadership, championship success, and national recognition have built a legacy that continues to define the standard of excellence for Hinds.

In 1984, Dot Murphy made history as the first female football coach in NJCAA history, breaking barriers and reshaping perceptions across the nation. Her groundbreaking role at Hinds drew widespread attention and became the focus of an NFL-produced documentary in 1996 that earned an Emmy Award for Best Documentary. Her impact on athletics in Mississippi was recognized with her induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, and her remarkable career was further honored with induction into the 2025 NJCAA Hall of Fame.

Before her coaching career, Murphy was an elite basketball player. At Starkville High School, she won two state championships, scored 2,772 career points, averaged 33 points per game, and earned multiple All-State honors. She continued her success at Mississippi University for Women, surpassing 1,000 career points, earning All-American recognition, and won a National Championship. Internationally, she represented the United States at the 1972 and 1973 World University Games, capturing a silver medal in Moscow.

Gene Murphy's career has been equally distinguished. A former standout linebacker at East Mississippi Community College and 2012 EMCC Hall of Fame inductee, the Bigbee Valley native built a football powerhouse at Hinds. Serving as head coach from 1987–2003 and again beginning in 2009, while also assuming duties as athletic director in 1997, Murphy compiled a 172-76-5 overall record. His teams captured six state and regional championships, including four consecutive titles from 1994–1997.

Murphy coached 36 NJCAA All-Americans, two National Players of the Year, and helped 57 former Eagles reach the NFL. Under his leadership, Hinds earned 14 playoff appearances, 12 division titles, and eight national bowl berths.

Together, the Murphys have led Hinds Athletics to 122 championships and earned 15 Hallbrook Awards, which is a legacy measured not only in wins, but in lives transformed.
