Eagles fall just short of Region 23 Championship game to end 2022 campaign

POPLARVILLE – The Hinds Community College Eagle baseball team showed some grit in their fourth game of the 2022 Region 23 Tournament, falling 6-5 to Pearl River Community College in the twelfth inning. This loss would end the 2022 campaign, one where the Eagles saw 30 wins for the first time since 2017.

The Wildcats drew first blood in the first inning on a two-run homerun and added another in the third on a passed ball.

Gage Bihm (Washington, La.) drew the start in this win-or-go-home game. The southpaw threw 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and striking out four. He was relieved by Kendrick Bershell (Vicksburg), who put on a show. Bershell threw 5.2 innings, only giving up three hits and striking our eight. The Eagles also saw a stellar performance from Clayton Thurman (Vicksburg), who threw the final three innings, giving up four hits and striking out four.

Needing to get the bats going, Justin Williams (Madison) put the Eagles on the board with a solo shot to dead center that cut into the Wildcat lead.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the sixth inning behind yet another Williams homerun and a double by Connor Chisolm (Madison) that scored Thurman. But the Wildcats got one back in the bottom half to regain the lead.

Vantrel Reed then came up big for the Eagles later in the game when he hit a two-run homerun to give the Eagles their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth. This gave the Eagles the chance to win it going into the bottom half of the ninth.

The Wildcats would eventually walk the game off in the twelfth inning to eventually take the 2022 Region 23 Championship over LSU-Eunice by a score of 11-4.
