RAYMOND – Hinds Community College football (2-2 overall, 2-0 conference) is set to host fifth-ranked Jones College (4-0 overall, 2-0 conference) Thursday in Raymond for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
With the Bobcats being ranked fifth in the country, tomorrow's game will mark the second time this season the Eagles will host a top-five opponent on Gene Murphy Field.
Last Week
The Eagles are coming off their second consecutive conference win with a 14-0 shutout of Pearl River Community College in week three. The Bobcats beat the Warriors of East Central Community College in a close one 17-14 last week in Ellisville.
93rd Meeting
Tomorrow's game will be the 93
rd meeting between the two teams. Jones holds the overall record 51-38-4.
Out of the last 11 meetings, the Bobcats hold a 7-4 advantage. The last win for the Eagles over Jones was in 2020 during the COVID-19 shortened season.
South Division Co-Champions
Hinds, Jones and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College all shared a piece of the 2021 Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) South Division title. The Eagles and Bobcats both made the playoffs, with Hinds advancing to the conference championship game after knocking off East Mississippi in the semifinals.
Unbeaten in Conference
Both teams come into this game 2-0 in conference. The Eagles have beaten East Central and Pearl River, while the Bobcats have beaten Co-Lin and East Central.
Pitching a Shutout
Against Pearl River last week, the Eagle defense didn't allow a point. The defense only allowed 27 yards on the ground and allowed 211 through the air. Hinds also forced three turnovers in the contest, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Battle of the Backs
This game will feature two very potent rushing attacks. Jones is led in rushing by Robert Henry (Lumberton), who has rushed for 684 yards on 97 carries. Henry also has 10 touchdowns on the season.
On the other hand, Hinds is led in rushing by
Jamarian Samuels (Ocala, Fla.), who has rushed for 447 yards on 70 carries. Samuels has two scores on his resumé this season.
Last week, both backs had tremendous outings. Henry rushed for 161 yards on 24 carries and Samuels rushed for 204 yards on 27 carries with one touchdown.
Our House
Tomorrow's contest marks the fourth time the Eagles will play inside Joe Renfroe Stadium so far this season. The lone away game that Hinds had was at East Central. The month of October features only one home game when Gulf Coast comes to town on October 20. The Eagles will travel to Southwest Mississippi Community College, Itawamba Community College and Copiah-Lincoln Community College to round out the 2022 season.
