RAYMOND – Hinds Community College football fell 31-28 to Northwest Mississippi Community College Thursday evening after being down 24-0 at the half.

"One thing I told our coaches to do is to give our players some confidence in the second half," said head coach Larry Williams. "We have the talent to win, but we just have to put together a complete performance."

Northwest broke open the scoring with a field goal with 8:09 left in the first quarter and added their first touchdown less than three minutes later to take a 10-0 lead. The Rangers would lead by ten at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Rangers scored two touchdowns to extend their lead to 24-0. Northwest would take this lead into the half.

The Eagles responded to a missed field goal by the Rangers and scored on the ensuing possession on a seven-yard Jeffrey Pittman (Taylorsville) run. This score was the first touchdown of the 2022 season and sparked a major comeback by the Eagles. The third quarter came to a close with the Eagles trailing 24-7.

Shortly after the beginning of the fourth quarter, Pittman's number was called again and he scored from 50 yards out on a fourth down play. The score was 24-14 after the Louie Gatlin (Jackson) extra point was made.

The Rangers quickly drove down the field after the Eagle score and scored another touchdown to make the score 31-14.

Jamarian Samuels (Ocala, Fla.) quickly put the Eagle offense in good field position when he brought back the ensuing kickoff 54 yards. Deontez White (Camden) set up a one-yard score by Samuels with a big 39-yard reception. The score was 31-21 with less than six minutes to play in the contest.

With the clock winding down, the Eagles got a big stop on fourth down to get the ball back with less than three minutes to play. The stop was made by freshman defensive back Isaiah Bolton (Columbia).

The Eagles cut the lead to three on a 26-yard touchdown from Ruben Lee II (Moss Point) to Michael Lott (Miami, Fla.) with less than a minute to play.

After a missed on-side kick, the Rangers kneeled to seal the 31-28 victory.
