ELLISVILLE, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Football team dropped their first MACCC South division game on Thursday against #9 Jones College by a final score of 21-3. The Eagles dropped to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in divisional play.
On the Bobcats second drive of the contest, Trent Davis punched the ball into the endzone on a 3-yard rushing touchdown to give Jones the 7-0 advantage at the 8:38 mark of the first quarter. Both defenses did their part for the rest of the first quarter as the Bobcats held the 7-0 lead.
Vernorrius Chaney forced a fumble on the opening play of the second quarter and K'Swaya Moffett Jr. picked it up as the Bobcats were in the red zone. Midway through the second quarter,
Tanner Hollingsworth booted a 30-yard field goal to put Hinds on the board. On the next possession, Jones ran two plays to score on a 68-yard TD pass to extend their lead to 14-3. At the halftime break, the score remained 14-3.
Both defenses did their job in the third quarter, but with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter
Zack Andrews picked off Brax Garrison to give the Eagles the momentum. The drive ended on a 34-yard punt by
Tanner Hollingsworth, but at the end of the third quarter Jones still held on to the 14-3 advantage.
On the opening drive of the fourth quarter,
Tanner Hollingsworth runs a fake punt for 31 yards to give the Eagles a new set of downs. With 7:10 remaining in the ball game, the Bobcats extended their lead to 21-3 after a rushing touchdown by Houston Johnson. The Eagles failed to gain any momentum for the rest of the game as the Eagles fell 21-3 to #9 Jones College
Branden Jennings led the Eagles defense with eight total tackles and 1.5 TFL, while
Zack Andrews grabbed the only interception of the game for the Eagles.
Tanner Hollingsworth punted the ball 12 times for 437 yards and dropped the ball inside the 20-yard line twice.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, October 12 against Southwest Mississippi Community College for our annual Pink Out game at Joe Renfroe Stadium at Gene Murphy Field. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM.
