Johnson’s Seven-Hit Day Leads Eagles to Doubleheader Sweep at MGCCC

PERKINSTON, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Baseball team continued their winning streak after knocking off Mississippi Gulf Coast CC in both ends of the doubleheader on Tuesday. The Eagles defeated the Bulldogs in game one 10-6 and secured the sweep with a 9-5 win in game two.  
 
GAME ONE

 
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the hosts picked up the first run of the ballgame from a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 1-0 advantage. The Eagles' offense began to heat up in the third inning after RBI singles by Evan McCarthy and Clay Benson to give the Eagles the 3-1 lead. 
 
Clay Benson knocks an RBI-single that scores Cameron Hill to extend the Eagles lead to 4-1. In the same inning, Dylan Coleman drew a walk that scored Ashton Johnson as Hinds scratched across another run. Evan McCarthy hit his second RBI single in the contest to give the Eagles the 6-1 advantage. 
 
The eagles score three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a commanding 9-1 lead. MGCCC hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 9-5. The Bulldogs score their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but John drove in the final run of the contest in the top of the ninth as the Eagles secure the 10-6 victory over the Bulldogs.
 
Ashton Johnson led the Eagles offensively going 4-5 from the plate, scored three runs, and tallied an RBI. Connor Chisolm, Clay Benson, and Evan McCarthy all had a couple of hits in the contest. 
 
Ryan Herbison got the start on the and the win on the mound for the Eagles after tossing 7.o strong innings. Herbison struck out seven batters and only had two walks in the outing. Lincoln Sheffield came in relief for the Eagles and tossed a couple of innings and only gave up one run.  
 
GAME TWO

 
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bulldogs scored a run in the first and second inning to bring the score to 2-0 after two complete innings. After a scoreless third inning, the Eagles scratched across their first run of the game from an RBI-double by Evan McCarthy
 
Connor Chisolm belted a two-run homer to right field in the top of the fifth inning as the Eagles took the first lead of the game with a score of 3-2. Hinds scored five runs in the top of the sixth by way of a two RBI double from Tom Lee, a sacrifice fly by Cameron Hill, and two passed balls to bring the score to 8-2.
 
The Bulldogs plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagle still held the 8-5 advantage going into the final inning of play. Tom Lee drove in Dylan Coleman for the final run of the contest in the top of the seventh as the Eagles secured the doubleheader sweep and the 9-5 game two victory. 
 
Ashton Johnson went 3-3 from the plate and scored two run to lead the Eagles offensively. Tom Lee had two hits in the contest and had a season-high three RBI in the 9-5 win. Evan McCarthy also had a couple of hits in the game and scored a run. 
 
Austin Robinson got the start and the win on the mound for Hind in game two of the doubleheader. Robinson pitched 5.0 innings, tallied four strikeouts, and faced 24 batters. Alex McGarrh came in relief and only allowed three hits to close the game for the Eagles.  
 
UP NEXT
 
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, April 22 against Itawamba Community College for the final trip of the regular season. The first pitch in Fulton is set for 2:00 PM.
