Eagles Split Opening Day Doubleheader Against John A. Logan College

RAYMOND, Miss. –  The Hinds Community College Baseball team spit the Opening Day doubleheader Against #RV John A. Logan College at Joe G. Moss Field on Friday afternoon. The visitors took the opening game by a final score of 10-9, but the Eagles bounced back in game two to defeat the Vols 5-3 after an impressive performance on the mound by Lincoln Sheffield.
 
GAME ONE
 
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the visitors got on the board first in the top of the first inning to give the Vols the early advantage. The Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning to level the score up at one.
 
JALC did not waste anytime and scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take the 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the third inning. The Eagles did not go down without a fight and took two runs back in the bottom half of the third to cut the lead to just one run. 
 
The Vols score two runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take the 8-3 lead. Hinds got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but the visitors scored two in the top of the eighth to bring the score to 10-4 going into the bottom of the eighth. The Eagles put on their rally hats and scored five runs in the eighth to cut the lead to just one run going into the ninth inning. The Eagles come from behind effort fell short to drop game one 10-9.
 
Thomas Marsala finished the game going 3-4 from the plate, scored two runs, and tallied an RBI in the contest. Brice Ainsworth had a .600 batting average in the contest and picked up a couple of RBI. Graham Busbea also went 3-5 in the game, while Braden Richardson went 2-3 at the plate. Cameron Hill hit the only homerun and sac fly for the Eagles in the game to finish the contest with four RBI. Tyler Janos and Zan Ellis each had a hit in the contest.
 
GAME TWO
 
Looking to bounce back in the opening doubleheader, the Eagles leaned on a stellar outing on the mound from Lincoln Sheffield. In the seven-inning game, Hinds scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 advantage over the Vols. 
 
The visitors level the score at one, but the hosts put up a four frame in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead going into the third inning of play. After a scoreless third and fourth inning, JALC cut the lead to just two runs in the top of the fifth. The Eagles went on to take the game 5-3 and picked up their first victory of the 2024 season. 
 
Thomas marsala was the only Eagle with multiple hits in the contest grabbing two of them. Additionally, he finished the contest with two RBI. Cameron Hill also posted two RBI in the contest as the Eagled picked up the 5-3 victory. 
 
Lincoln Sheffield was dominate on the mound for the Eagles going 6.0 innings and only gave up four hits in the game. Additionally, he did not have any earned runs in the contest and struck out nine batters. Dawson Muenzenmay came in relief for Sheffield in the top of the seventh inning and went on to pick up the save. 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, February 6 against Millsaps College JV in Jackson, MS. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 PM.
