Hinds Baseball Punches Ticket to Region XXIII Tournament in Poplarville

SENATOBIA, Miss. – The Hinds Community College baseball team picked up the sweep over the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers in a Best-of-Three series in Senatobia. Hinds grabbed the game one victory 9-5 and came back the next day with vengeance and earned the 11-6 victory to earn the sweep and punched their ticket to the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament.

In the first game of the series, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. The Rangers scratched across their first run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning to cut into the lead. The Eagles got that run back in the top of the third inning to make the score 4-1 going into the fourth inning. NWCC added a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to even the contest at 4. Hinds quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth and Tyler Janos blasted a grand slam in the top of the seventh to give the Eagles the 9-4 lead. The Rangers plated a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the damage was already done as the Eagles won the game 9-5.

Cameron Hill, Braden Richardson, and Tyler Janos all recorded a homerun in the game, while Ashton Johnson earned an extra base hit. Lincoln Sheffield got the start and earned the win on the mound for the Eagles. Sheffield pitched seven innings and only gave up three runs as he faced 34 batters in the ballgame. Cole Burton came in relief to close the final two innings for Hinds as he registered three strikeouts. 

In the second game of the series, the Eagles knew if they won, they would advance to the Region XXIII Tournament and Hinds did just that. After a scoreless first inning, Northwest plated the first run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning. The Eagles then scored two in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take the 6-1 lead going into the sixth inning. The hosts cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh as the score was 6-4 going into the final two innings of the game. Hinds outscored the Eagles 5-2 in the final two innings to earn the 11-6 victory and punch their ticket to the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament. 

Thomas Marsala and Braden Richardson both registered a double and a homerun in the game, while Graham Busbea tacked on an extra base hit. Ryan Herbison got the start and the win on the mound for the Eagles as he pitched 5.2 innings and registered nine strikeouts. Ford McDaniel came in relief and gave up an earned run. Alex McGarrh went the rest of the way for Hinds as he struck out three batters. 

The Eagles will return to action on May Tuesday, May 14 against the #1 seed Pearl River Community College Wildcats in the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament, hosted by Pearl River Community College.
