TANNER, Ala. – The Hinds Community College men's basketball team opened the season in dominant fashion over the weekend, earning two victories at the Calhoun Community College Classic. The Bulldogs defeated Wallace CC–Selma 72–57 on Friday before closing out the event with a 67–55 win over Bevill State CC on Saturday.
On day one, Hinds found themselves in a first-half shootout with Wallace CC–Selma, holding a narrow 30–29 advantage at the break. The Bulldogs took control in the second half, outscoring Wallace 42–28 to secure the 72–57 victory.
Sophomore
Austin Ratliff led the charge with a double-double, recording 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Colain Brown matched Ratliff's offensive output with 24 points, while
Christopher Hayward added 11 points to round out a balanced attack.
The momentum carried into Saturday's matchup against Bevill State, where Hinds set the tone early with a 33-23 halftime lead.
Sophomore guard
Daveon Henry paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 22 points, hitting three three-pointers and going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Ratliff continued his strong weekend with another double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Brown contributed 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman
Tyric Francois impressed in his collegiate debut with 12 points, while Hayward added six rebounds and a strong defensive presence off the bench.
The Bulldogs (2–0) will look to keep their momentum rolling as they travel to Lufkin, Texas, to face Angelina College tonight. Tipoff is set for 6 PM.
