Hinds Puts Together Solid Opening Day, Sets Up Full Slate for Finals

Hinds CC – Day One Recap & Day Two Finals Preview
Hinds Community College made the most of the opening day at the NJCAA Indoor Championships, qualifying a deep group of athletes for Saturday's finals through both prelims and automatic spots. With finalists spread throughout the sprint, hurdle, mid‑distance, relay, and field events, Hinds carries steady momentum into Day Two.

Day One Recap
Women's Team
400m – Queen Usunobun (54.03q, 1st overall)
Queen opened her title defense with the fastest time of the preliminary round, running 54.03 to secure the top qualifying position. As the defending national champion in the event, she is well‑positioned heading into Saturday's final.
200m – Queen Usunobun (23.90q, 5th overall)
Queen also advanced in the 200m, qualifying fifth. Her performance puts her in contention for points in a second individual event.
60m – Canelia Hope (7.53q, 7th overall)
Hope earned a spot in the 60m final with a solid qualifying performance, giving Hinds another representation in the women's sprint finals.
600m – Akaree Roberts (1:34.20q, 5th overall)
Roberts advanced to the 600m final after finishing fifth in the prelims. She will join Usunobun and Hope as part of a strong women's finals contingent.

Men's Team
60m – Jayval Wright (6.64q, 1st), Raheem Pinnock (6.65q, 2nd), Curtis Coleman III (6.70q, 7th)
Hinds placed three athletes in the men's 60m final. Wright led all qualifiers with the fastest time of the day, Pinnock followed closely in second, and Coleman secured the seventh qualifying spot. Having three finalists gives Hinds a strong scoring opportunity.
200m – Jayval Wright (20.77q, 2nd), Raheem Pinnock (20.87q, 4th)
Both Wright and Pinnock advanced in the 200m as well, entering the final in second and fourth positions respectively.
60mH – Matthew Sullivan (7.91q, 2nd overall)
Sullivan advanced to the 60m hurdles final with the second‑fastest qualifying time, putting him in competitive position for Saturday.

Automatic Finals Qualifiers
These athletes and relays did not compete on Day One but will go directly into Saturday's championship rounds.
Men's Triple Jump – Demetrius Taite Jr.
Taite Jr. is part of the 12-athlete field in the men's triple jump final scheduled for Saturday morning.
Women's 4x400m Relay
Hinds enters the women's 4x400m relay final with the team of
A. Roberts – Q. Usunobun – A. Cumberbatch – K. Norbert
and a seed time of 3:45.08.
Men's 4x400m Relay
The men's relay of
C. Carson – R. Turner – D. Gordon – J. Wright
enters Saturday's final with a seed time of 3:15.38.

With representatives across sprints, hurdles, mid‑distance, jumps, and relays, Hinds is set up for a full day of competition and multiple chances to add points on the final day.
