RAYMOND, Miss. – The Hinds Community College football team battled through wet, muddy conditions and a lightning delay Thursday night at Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium, earning a 21-7 victory over the Holmes Community College Bulldogs. With the win, Hinds moves to 1-2 on the season.
Jarred Loper scored the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter to give the Eagles the early advantage just before the delay. After a scoreless second quarter, Hinds found its offense in the third quarter. Quarterback Jamarcus Pittman connected with Braishun Forbes for a 40-yard touchdown with 12:36 remaining in the quarter, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead.
Hinds added to its advantage later in the quarter when Makari Bodiford punched in a four-yard touchdown run with 2:33 remaining. Braylen Spann's extra point gave the Eagles a 21-7 lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the game.
The Hinds defense took care of business in the second half, keeping Holmes off the scoreboard while forcing a key turnover late in the fourth quarter. Jermiah Campbell recovered a Holmes fumble, helping the Eagles preserve the victory.
Pittman finished the night 12-of-20 passing for 156 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 26 yards on nine carries. C.J. Martin led Hinds on the ground with 39 yards on eight carries, while Kelton Young added 17 yards on three carries and DJ Miller rushed for 14 yards on four attempts.
Kelton Young had a team-high of four receptions, while Kiandre Terry hauled in three passes for 65 yards. DJ Miller added two catches for 19 yards, and Forbes finished with one reception for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Floyd Harris led Hinds with seven total tackles, followed by Andre Jackson Jr. with six and Jordan Randle with five. Zedric Washington recorded four tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Teborse Coleman and Dayne Robichaux also recorded sacks for the Eagles.
As a team, Hinds finished with 277 yards of total offense, including 121 rushing yards and 156 passing yards. The Eagles converted 4-of-16 third downs and controlled the clock with 34:51 of possession.
The Eagles will open conference play on September 17th against Southwest Mississippi CC in Summit. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
