Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium

Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium

Joe Renfroe Stadium is the home of the Hinds Community College football team. The stadium is named for Joe Renfroe, who is best known as the former head football coach at Hinds. The field was named after Gene Murphy in 2017. Murphy served as a head coach and athletic director for Hinds CC.

Renfroe, elected to the Hinds CC Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, won numerous games and championships, including the 1957 state championship in which the Eagles went undefeated and ran roughshod over their opponents.

Renfroe Stadium holds approximately 6,000 people and is filled to capacity on Thursday nights. It features a video scoreboard and a two-story press box for media and announcing crew.

The lighting system for Renfroe Stadium was constructed in 1996. Renfroe also features a recently renovated track and field area, home of the national and state champion Eagles track team.

Some amenities of the stadium, in conjunction with the Robert T. Mayo Fieldhouse, include both home and visitor dressing rooms, officials' dressing rooms, training areas and weight facilities.

With Mayo Fieldhouse on the south end of the stadium, Gene Murphy Field is flanked on the north end of the stadium by the Vashti Underwood Muse Band Hall, which was completed in 2010.

Joe Renfroe Stadium has played host to 50 players that reached the highest level of football, the National Football League (NFL), since 1980, 36 All-Americans since 1987 and 300 four-year college signees since 1987.
