Lady Eagles off to solid start

The Hinds women's tennis team is off to a 3-2 start as the midway point is around the corner on the 2012 campaign.

Hinds has notched victories over Holmes Community College (9-0), East Central Community College (9-0), Holmes again (6-3), while being defeated by Northeast Mississippi Community College (5-4) and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (8-1).

In the first victory over Holmes, a host of Lady Eagles picked up victories on the day, including Natalia Grytsiak of Saverodeonetsk, Ukraine, a sophomore (number one singles); Maria Castrillo of Cabudare, Venezuela, a freshman (number two singles); Ashley Nowell of Brandon, a freshman (number three singles); Victoria Cook of Jackson, a freshman (number four singles); Nowell (number five singles) and Frances Book of Yazoo City, a freshman (number six singles).

Grytsiak and Castrillo won in number one doubles, Cook and Latoya Whitley of Pascagoula, a freshman, won in number two doubles, and Nowell and Book claimed victory in number three doubles.

In the shutout victory over East Central, Grytsiak won in number one singles, Castrillo won in number two singles and Whitley won in number three singles. Grytsiak and Castrillo won in number one doubles, and the other matches were claimed by Hinds due to incomplete lineups.

Grytsiak (number one singles), Cook (number four singles), Nowell (number five singles) and Book (number six singles) all picked up victories in the second go-round with Holmes. Grytsiak and Castrillo (number one doubles) and Cook and Whitley (number two doubles) both won in doubles play.

In the tough loss to Northeast, it was Grytsiak (number one singles), Castrillo (number two singles), Cook (number four singles) and Grytsiak and Castrillo (number one doubles) who all claimed victories.

Grytsiak was the lone winner for Hinds against Gulf Coast, winning her number one singles match.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Co-Lin today for a 2 p.m. match.
