Hinds Women’s Tennis Punches Ticket to NJCAA National Championship

RAYMOND, Miss. – After navigating a demanding schedule and a highly competitive conference slate, the Hinds Community College women's tennis team has earned its spot on the national stage, qualifying for the NJCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship in Sumter, South Carolina.
The five-day championship event is scheduled for May 2–6 at the Palmetto Tennis Center, where the Lady Eagles will compete against the nation's top programs for a shot at a national title.

Hinds enters postseason play with a 10-7 overall record, a mark that reflects both resilience and growth throughout the spring. The Lady Eagles collected key conference victories and built momentum late in the season, highlighted by multiple dominant 9-0 sweeps. Just as important, Hinds gained valuable experience in tightly contested matches, sharpening the team's ability to perform under pressure heading into the championship.

The NJCAA Division II Championship features a unique and challenging format designed to test depth and consistency. The tournament is flighted, meaning each player competes within a designated singles and doubles bracket based on lineup position. Each flight includes both a main draw and a backdraw, allowing competitors multiple opportunities to contribute points to their team's overall total.

Main draw matches will follow the traditional two-out-of-three sets format with standard scoring, placing a premium on endurance and mental toughness. In the event of weather or scheduling adjustments, backdraw matches may be modified to pro sets or alternative scoring formats at the discretion of the tournament committee.

Adding to the competitive intrigue, teams are prevented from facing opponents within their own region in the opening round, ensuring Hinds will square off against unfamiliar competition from across the country.

Team scoring emphasizes success in the main draw, with a first-round victory earning two points and each subsequent win adding to the total. Backdraw matches also contribute to the team score, making every match critical in the pursuit of a national championship.

For Hinds, success in Sumter will hinge on balance throughout the lineup. Strong doubles play will be key in setting the tone early, while depth in singles competition often determines how far a team can advance. The Lady Eagles have demonstrated both strengths throughout the season, positioning themselves as a team capable of making a strong push on the national stage.
