The Eagles of Hinds Community College (26-8 overall, 10-5 in the South) picked up a critical sweep of a home conference doubleheader against Co-Lin Community College on Wednesday, but not without a bit of drama.

Hinds won game one, 9-4, with a five-run sixth inning to break open the tie ballgame, and won game two, 5-4, after trailing by two runs going into the sixth inning.

The second game ended on a passed ball with the bases loaded for the walk-off victory for the Eagles, who are currently ranked 15th in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll.

Tyler Akins (Madison) and Daniel Gilbert (Ridgeland) each had two hits, including solo home runs, and three RBI in the first game.

The sophomore duo from Madison County is now tied for the team lead in home runs with four.

Akins also threw the last two innings on the mound to earn the win and move to 4-2 on the season.

In game two, the Eagles were led at the plate by Justin Smith (Florence), who finished with three RBI on the strength of three hits, including a home run and a double. The home run was the first of the season for the freshman catcher.

Carey Taylor (Brandon) threw the top of the seventh inning of the tie ball game to gain another victory on the mound. The sophomore righty is now 7-0 on the season.

Hinds also split a South division doubleheader with Pearl River Community College on Good Friday. The games were played at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson due to wet field conditions in Raymond.

The Eagles won game one, 4-3, in walk-off fashion again, as Chris Jones (Mendenhall) got the game-winning single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. The sophomore outfielder had three hits and two runs scored in game one.

Akiko Thompson (Clinton), a freshman outfielder, also had three hits in the opener.

Akins threw the final three innings of the first game to get the win on the hump. He came in relief of Alex Gunn (Clinton), a sophomore pitcher, in game one of both Wednesday and last Friday's doubleheaders.

Gunn threw five plus innings in both contests, but earned a hard-luck no decision each time.

In the second game against Pearl River, the Eagles were paced by Smith, who was the lone Hinds hitter to finish with multiple hits (two) in the 8-1 loss.

Thompson was 1-3 and drove in the lone run for Hinds.

Nathan Aultman (Mangham, La.), a freshman pitcher, took the loss on the mound to fall to 5-2 on the year.

Hinds will return to game action on Saturday, when the Eagles travel to East Central Community College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
