Men’s soccer drops non-conference game to Belhaven

JACKSON - The Hinds Community College men's soccer team fell to the Belhaven University Blazers in a non-conference bout at the Blazers' Belhaven Bowl Stadium.

The Eagles dropped the game 4-0 on a rainy Monday evening against the four-year program. Despite the Eagles' tough play, the Blazers were able to capitalize off of Hind's limited mistakes. "Their [Belhaven] experience and technique in being a four-year program makes you pay for any mistakes you make and teaches you to play cleaner," said head coach Doug Williams.

The Eagles were able to get contributions from every player as the entire roster clocked minutes. This allowed a lot of freshmen to show their abilities and gain some experience. Although the Eagles played well and made some key plays, they were unable to string enough plays together to match scores with the Blazers.

Hind's freshman goal keeper, Joey Swinney (Kosciusko), was able to make his mark on the game. Swinney played in 60 minutes of the action and made some crucial saves in just his first game back from injury.

Though the Eagles lost the game, Williams retains that their solid play has shown promise for the future. "I believe that we are playing well and going in the right direction," said Williams. "Playing schools like Belhaven pushes the team to raise its level of play. That is why we play these four-year schools; it prepares us for conference play."

The Eagles (1-2) will look to be well-prepared for their first divisional game against Itawamba Community College (0-2). The game will be played on Friday, Sept. 1st at 4 p.m. at the ICC Soccer Complex in Fulton, Mississippi.
