UTICA - The Hinds Community College Utica men's basketball team is looking to take the momentum of their second win against a tough opponent in Holmes Community College into the break which will last through the Christmas Holiday.
With their 86-80 win over Holmes Community College at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium last night (Dec. 6), the Bulldogs move to a 7-3 record winning five of their last six games. The team ended the night with five players who had double digit points with Stephen Ayangma (Yaounde, Cameroon) and
Peyton Taylor (Cleveland) both logging 20 points. Ayangma recorded a double-double as he notched 11 rebounds to go along with three steals and a block.
On the young season, Ayangma is leading the way in scoring for the Bulldogs averaging 16 points per game while
Dontrell McQuarter (Baton Rouge, LA) and
Malik Henry (Terry) are keeping close averaging around 15 points per game. The Hinds basketball team will look to these guys to continue to lead the way when they resume play.
The Hinds Lady Bulldogs also claimed a big win against the Lady Bulldogs of Holmes as their 77-67 victory snapped a tough streak for Hinds women's basketball and thrusted them back above .500 heading into the holidays.
With their win against Holmes, the Hinds Lady Bulldogs move to 4-3 (1-1) on the year and get their revenge for their loss to Holmes less than a month ago. The Hinds women's team put together a solid performance in which a number of players contributed to the outcome.
The Lady Bulldogs have been led in scoring on the year by
Victoria Johnson (Camden) who is repeating her scoring performance of last season as she is averaging nearly 20 points per contest. She is trailed by teammate
Nakaylis Washington (McComb) who is averaging just shy of 14 points per game. The Lady Bulldogs have made their mark on teams this season through a steady scoring effort and solid defense, especially in the painted area as the team is averaging over 5 blocks per game.
The wins against Holmes will mark the last of 2018 as the teams do not resume play until the women's team plays January 1 against Kilgore College in Shreveport in a tournament hosted by Bossier Parish Community College. The men will not resume play until January 10 at Jones County Junior College at 8:30 p.m. The women's team will play before the men's team at 5:30 p.m. Starting with the games against Jones, the teams will exclusively play the remainder of their conference schedules.
