Hinds Baseball Riding Seven-Game Win Streak

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Hinds Community College Eagles baseball program is riding a seven game winning streak after securing wins over Baton Rouge Community College and Dakota State University this past Friday (March 8).

The Eagles took on the Baton Rouge Community College Bears in game one in a scheduled nine-inning ball game. However, Hinds would only need seven-innings to complete the mercy rule and won 15-0.

Freshman right fielder Ryan Jackson (Ridgeland) led the Eagles offense as he collected three hits in three at-bats and to go along with five runs batted in (RBI). Four of those RBI's came on one swing of the bat when Jackson drove an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam. Freshman first baseman Walker Burchfield (Clinton) also deposited a three-run homerun over the wall in left-center field and added a sac fly to drive in four total runs for the Eagles. Freshman second baseman John Bolton (Memphis, TN) had a stellar game at the plate as well. Bolton went three for four with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Preston Johnson (Crystal Springs) continued to impress as he threw six scoreless innings to earn his third victory of the season. Johnson allowed just three hits, one walk, and struck out eight batters before turning the ball over to freshman left-hander Blake Marshall (Mandeville, LA) to close out the game. Marshall was equally impressive in his one inning of work as he needed just seven pitches to collect three outs, one of which came via the strikeout.

In game two, the Eagles took on Dakota State University (DSU) in a scheduled seven-inning ball game. Once again, Hinds would take advantage of the mercy rule and defeated DSU 12-0 in five-innings.

On the mound, four Eagles combined to throw a perfect game. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Crowley (West Point) drew the start and pitched two innings racking up four strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Landon Tomkins (Brandon) pitched a scoreless third-inning tallying a strikeout of his own. Freshman right-hander Garrett Ramsey (Brandon) threw an impressive fourth inning and recorded his first career win as he struck out the side in order. Freshman sidewinder Gregory Oden Jr. (Ridgeland) closed the game out in the fifth and recorded one strikeout of his own.

At the plate, the Eagles offense combined for 10 hits led by freshman catcher CJ Keckler (Biloxi) and John Bolton who each had two hits apiece. Keckler also added two stolen bases and one RBI while Bolton tallied two RBI's and two stolen bases. Jovante Dorris (Raymond), Connor Carter (Madison), Ryan Jackson, Garrett Clarke (Brandon), and Colby Collier (Clinton) each had a hit of their own. The Eagles offense also combined to steal nine bases in the game.

The victories improved Hinds overall record to 10-3 on the season.

Hinds' games against Southwest Tennessee Community College this Tuesday, March 12 have been cancelled due to impending bad weather. Therefore, Hinds next scheduled games are set for this Saturday, March 16 on the road in Chalmette, Louisiana against Nunez Community College. Game one of the double header is set for 1 p.m. with game two to begin thirty minutes after game one.
