JACKSON – The Hinds Community College baseball team split Sunday's double-header reschedule against Northwest Mississippi Community College with a 4 – 3 win in game one followed by a 0 – 4 loss in game two.
Game one saw the opening match-up between the Eagles, who were third in the MACJC standings, and the first-place Rangers go down to the wire in a pitcher's duel. The starters on the mound for each squad logged quality starts with Hinds'
Harrison Haley (Madison) going 5.2 innings only allowing three runs on 7 hits and 7 strikeouts, a season high in strikeouts for the freshman. With the score tied in the sixth inning, Haley would be set for a no decision.
Landon Tomkins (Brandon),
Connor Carter (Madison), and
Garrett Ramsey (Brandon) would combine to hold the Rangers' score at 3 to bring in the game one win for the Eagles. Ramsey would earn the save, his third of the season.
Colby Collier (Clinton) would be the standout performer and go ahead run for the Eagles offense in game one of the contest as he notched the only two-hit performance for Hinds in game one. Collier would score on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7
th inning by
Pablo Lanzarote (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) putting Hinds ahead for good.
Game two would see another strong pitching effort by both teams with Northwest shutting out the Hinds offense. The Eagles pitching staff would post a good performance of their own, though, as
Blake Marshall (Mandeville, LA),
Ryan Jackson (Ridgeland), and
Jake Smithhart (Pearl) would combine to allow only 2 earned runs over seven innings. Marshall, the starter, logged 3.2 innings with no earned runs and 6 strikeouts.
At the plate,
Walker Burchfield (Clinton) logged the only multi-hit game with 2 of the Eagles' 4 hits including a double.
