Box Score RAYMOND - Hinds Community College men's soccer advanced to the conference semifinals after edging Jones College in penalty kicks Tuesday evening. Needing one goal to win in penalty kicks, sophomore forward
Hernandez (Pearl) came in clutch for the Eagles and pushed one past the keeper to seal the victory.
"I am proud of the way the team played," head coach
Doug Williams said. "The guys worked hard for each other all night and it was a team effort that produced the win."
Towards the end of a quiet first half, the Bobcats broke the silence on a goal by Lee Hill in the 44th minute to open up the scoring. Jones would take this one goal lead into halftime.
Twenty minutes into the second half, the Eagles found the back of the net to tie the game. Freshman forward
Carson Barefoot (Clinton) came up with this goal on a
Greg Anderson (Jackson) assist in the 65th minute.
Neither team managed to score in the final minutes of regulation, so this game would be eventually decided in overtime. This tight contest continued throughout both periods of overtime, which led to penalty kicks deciding the winner.
During penalty kicks, the Eagles were in prime position to win when they were faced with a 3-3 tie, needing one goal to win it after several Bobcat misses. Hernandez managed to secure the 1-1 draw, 4-3 penalty kick victory with his final goal.
The Eagles return to the pitch on Saturday, November 6 as they take on Pearl River in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The game will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. in Ridgeland at Freedom Ridge Park.
