Eagles down Bears 5-2 on Sophomore Night

10/19/2022 11:15:00 AM

Box Score RAYMOND – Hinds Community College men's soccer used late-game scoring to beat Southwest Mississippi Community College 5-2 on Sophomore Night.

"On the night, especially given their recognition I have to say a big thank you to our sophomores," said head coach Robert Gardner. "They have served this program well and have so much to be proud of."

The Eagles only needed seven minutes to strike first when Tony King (Vicksburg) put the Eagles up 1-0 off an assist from Noah Hinkle (Madison). However, the Bears were able to tie the game up to make the score 1-1 in the closing minutes of the first half.

In a strange turn of events, the Eagles went up 2-1 with just a few minutes left in the first half when Dylan Harrigill (Jackson) sent a ball into the box that rattled off a few players and found the net for an own goal for the Bears. The Eagles would go into halftime leading 2-1.

The Bears would only need about 10 minutes to equalize the match in the second half. But, with less than 28 minutes left in the match, King would draw a foul in the box to give the Eagles a penalty kick. Jovan Mihajlovic (Serbia) would bury the penalty kick and put the Eagles up 3-2.

Nicolas Jones (Chile) gave the Eagles a much-needed cushion with two goals in less than three minutes. His first goal came off an assist by João Pereira (Portugal) and his second was scored after a shot by Pereira was deflected by the Southwest keeper. Hinds would walk away with a 5-2 victory.

"I am very happy for the team as a whole just based on the performance I was able to see tonight," said Gardner. "We had a game plan, we stuck to it, and from those specific moments that we noted as primary, we were able to create three of our five goals. So, I'm really pleased with that."
