SUMMIT – Hinds Community College baseball split a double-header with Southwest Mississippi Community College Tuesday by taking game one 6-5 and falling in game two 10-6.
Game one
The Eagles relied on a three-run eighth to secure their 6-5 game one victory.
After a leadoff double by
Justin Williams (Madison) to start the game,
Clay Benson (Monroe, La.) kicked-off the scoring by singling in Williams.
Southwest wouldn't grab a run until the fourth due to three straight scoreless frames from starting pitcher
Josh Rodriguez (Belleville, Nj). Rodriguez exited in the fourth inning, finishing with two punch-outs, while giving up four hits and three runs.
Kendrick Bershell (Vicksburg),
Clayton Thurman (Vicksburg) and
Connor Nation (Madison) all pitched in relief. Nation ended up earning his second win of the season in his outing.
Hinds got two runs back in the sixth inning when
Connor Chisolm (Madison) singled in Rodriguez and Thurman to tie the game up at three.
Southwest took a 5-3 lead when they scored one run in the sixth and seventh inning of the contest. Needing to put up crooked numbers, the Eagle offense re-took the lead by plating three runs on two homeruns in the eighth inning by Chisolm and
Reed Kellum (Jackson). Chisolm's homerun was his first of the season. Those three runs were all the Eagles needed to take game one.
Game two
The Bears broke open the scoring in the second inning by scoring one run. However, the Eagles would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning. Those three runs came on a
Justin Williams double and a Bear error on a
Clay Benson ground ball.
Southwest tied the game up at three in the bottom half of the third inning and held the Eagles scoreless in the top of the fourth. The Bears scored all the runs they needed to win game two in the fourth inning when they plated seven to take a 10-3 lead.
Hinds would get three more runs in the fifth inning when
Connor Chisolm scored on an error and
Vantrel Reed (Vicksburg) doubled in
Gentry Tigrett (Brandon) and
Clay Benson.
Starting on the mound for the Eagles was sophomore
Gage Bihm (Washington, La.), who struck out four in his three-inning outing.
John David Gunn (Clinton) and Jake Riley Gunn (Hattiesburg) both made appearances in relief.

The Eagles will head to Booneville on Saturday, April 2 to take on Northeast Mississippi Communithy College. First pitch of the double-header is set for 2 p.m.
