Eagles top Lions, get chance to play for Region 23 title

POPLARVILLE – After getting run-ruled 13-3 against Pearl River Community College yesterday, Hinds Community College baseball picked up a 10-4 win over East Mississippi Community College to advance further in the Region 23 Tournament. The Eagles will face Pearl River again this evening at 7 p.m. for a shot at the Region 23 Championship on Friday.
 
On the mound, the Eagles got an eight-inning performance from Austin Fugler (Sontag). Fugler gave up eight hits and struck out one in the win. John David Gunn (Clinton) came in the game in the ninth and shut the door to secure the 10-4 victory.
 
East Mississippi struck first in the second inning with a homerun to take a 2-0 lead.
 
In the next inning, the Eagles tied the game up behind a Gavin Mink (Olive Branch) RBI fielder's choice and a Clayton Thurman (Vicksburg) double. But the Lions would grab a 3-2 lead on a passed ball in the top of the fourth.
 
The game was broken open in the bottom of the fourth when the Eagles scored six runs. Josh Rodriguez (Belleville, Nj) got things started with an RBI single, which was quickly followed by another single by Mink. Dylan Coleman (Madison) then put the Eagles up big with a grand slam.
 
The Lions got their fourth and final run in the fifth inning to cut into the Eagle lead.
 
The ninth and tenth run for the Eagles was scored in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mink hit his first homer of the season and Justin Williams (Madison) scored Connor Chisolm (Madison) on a single.

The Eagles take on Pearl River Community College this evening at 7 p.m. for a chance to play in the Region 23 championship on Friday.
