RAYMOND – Hinds Community College football (2-2, 2-0 Conf.) picked up their first home win of the season with a 14-0 win over fourteenth-ranked Pearl River Community College (2-2, 0-1 Conf.) on Homecoming.

The Eagle defense made their presence known on the Wildcat's first offensive drive of the game when they forced a quick three-and-out. The defense would go on to pitch a shutout in the game and force three turnovers.

"This was a gritty performance by our guys tonight," said head coach Larry Williams. "We need to make sure we continue to improve in the running game with our blocking, but I'm happy we got another conference win."

After the punt, the Eagle offense struck first after going 10 plays for 64 yards. Jamarian Samuels (Ocala, Fla.) scored the first touchdown of the game with his three-yard run.

Pearl River threatened to put points on the board with a 27-yard field goal attempt late in the first quarter. But the kick sailed wide right to keep the Eagle's 7-0 lead in tact.

When the Hinds offense stalled, the Eagle special teams unit stepped up. Ben Duncan (Florence) had a career night, finishing with eight punts for 380 yards. Duncan had a long of 71-yards and landed two of his punts inside the 20-yard line.

"Ben was the defensive player of the game," Williams said. "His ability to pin the other team deep really helped our defense succeed."

The first of three turnovers for the Eagle defense happened with 4:01 left in the first half when Mushune Walker (Macon) intercepted a Lawson Pratt pass. Hinds couldn't respond to the turnover, but the defense forced a fumble on the first play of Pearl River's next possession. Derick Hunter (Fort Myers, Fla.) came up with the loose ball, which set up the Eagle offense with the ball on the Wildcat 13-yard line.

Ruben Lee II (Moss Point) would then score the Eagle's final points of the contest with a 13-yard touchdown run to push the Eagle lead to 14-0 at the break.

Both teams traded punts until the final minutes of the contest when Emahd Dabney (Jackson) forced the Eagle's third and final turnover with his first interception of the season.

Several big runs by Samuels and Jerrell Boyd (Lexington) set up the victory formation where Ranson Oakes (Raymond) took a knee to run out the final seconds and secure the 14-0 victory.
