Tennis Competes Well at 2023 ITA Southern Regional Championships

ELLISVILLE, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Men's and Women's Tennis teams competed in the 2023 ITA JUCO Southern Regional Championships last week on the campus of Jones College. Both teams showed resilience and competed well in the tournament.

Fabiola Guedes and Hanna Hoop were women's doubles champions in the Flight B Main draw. Guedez and Hoop were the number 1 seed in the Flight B doubles and they proved to be unstoppable. They dominated in the finals vs Jones College's Annabelle Simmons and Ainsley Tomkins with a final score of 6-3, 6-0.

Women's Doubles Champions, Macie Shelton and Alara Akgul, competed in the Flight A Consolation and won a tight finals match versus Copiah Lincoln's number 1 doubles team, with a score of 9-7.

Hanna Hoop, Women's Singles Finalist, in the Flight B Main Draw dominated every one of her singles matches until she reached the finals match on Saturday. She lost in a tough battle with the number 1 seed from Jones College, Annalyn Housley, and dropped the match by the score of 3-6, 3-6.

Briley Oakes and Tristin Rollins, Men's Doubles Finalists, fell to Itawamba's Jacob Jolly and Ben Orr in the finals with a score of 2-6, 3-6 in the Flight C Main Draw.

Fabian Juarez and Gabriel Masu were Men's Doubles Finalists in the Flight A Main Draw. Their week began with a decisive match win over the number 1 seeded team from Mississippi Gulf Coast, Mestre and Vicente, 6-2, 6-3. This set them on a roll to stamp their ticket to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia on October 12th to 16th. Unfortunately, their road to Rome went through two teams from Meridian.

In the semifinals, Juarez and Masu defeated Meridian's Denzel Jones and Sebastian Vaquero 6-1, 6-4. Saturday afternoon's final pitted Juarez and Masu against the number 2 seed team of Simon Ojeda and Loic Hiss from Meridian Community College. It was a challenging three set match from the first serve to the very last point. Juarez and Masu fell short with a close score of 5-7, 6-3, 3-6.
