Chisolm Extends Hitting Streak to Eight Games as Eagles Split with Lions to Open MACCC Play

RAYMOND, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Baseball team split their doubleheader with East Mississippi Community College at Joe G. Moss Field on Saturday to open up MACCC play. The Eagles took the first game by a final score of 11-4 but fell in the second game 11-3. Hinds moves to 13-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. 
 
GAME ONE

In the first game of the doubleheader the Eagles dominated from the first pitch. The Eagles and Lions struck for a couple of runs in the first frame with EMCC scoring two runs in the top of the first inning before an RBI groundout and an RBI single by Clay Benson leveled the contest at 2. 
 
The Eagles broke open the scoring in the second inning when Clay Benson hit a double off the center field wall the clear the bases and make the score 5-2. In the next at-bat, Tyler Janos knocked a double to left field to score Benson from second base to bring the score to 6-2.
 
The Eagles extended the lead in the third inning after a solo homerun from Evan McCarthy and an RBI double by Connor Chisolm that scored Cole Thompson as the Eagles led 8-2 going into the fourth inning. After a scoreless fourth inning, Hinds picked up another run from a sacrifice fly from Dylan Coleman to push the score to 9-2.
 
The Eagles continued to score in the seventh pushing across two more runs to bring the score to 11-2 after seven complete innings. The Lions scored two runs in the top of the eight to bring the score to 11-4 going into the final inning. Both ball clubs did not score in the ninth, but the Eagles went on to win in dominating fashion 11-4. 
 
Clay Benson finished the game going 2-5 from the plate and registered 5 RBI, while Connor Chisolm went 2-3 from the plate and scored three runs. Ashton Johnson and Evan McCarthy were the other two Eagles to have a multi-hit game. 

 
Cole Smith got the start on the mound and threw 5.0 innings and totaled three strikeouts and only gave up two runs as he picked up his second victory on the season. John David Gunn was lights out for the Eagles in relief tossing two innings and not giving up a hit or run. Connor Nation came in the ballgame in the eighth and registered two strikeouts. Mayson Shealy came in the ninth and struck out two of the three batters that he faced. 
 
GAME TWO
 
The Eagles came up short in the second game of the doubleheader after the Lions scored six runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. EMCC scored another run in the top of the third, but Hinds responded with a run after Connor Chisolm hit an RBI triple that scored Ashton Johnson from first base as the Lions led 7-1 after three innings. 
 
EMCC scored four runs in the fourth to take a commanding 11-1 lead. After a RBI groundout by Tyler Janos and a RBI single by Tom Lee the Eagles cut the lead to 11-4 after four innings. The defense on both sides stepped up for the final three innings as the Eagles fell 11-3 in the final game of the doubleheader.
 
Offensively, Tom Lee led the Eagles going 2-2 from the dish and registered an RBI in the contest. Connor Chisolm, Clay Benson, and Cole Smith all registered a hit in the contest. 
 
Matthew Azordegan took the loss on the mound for the Eagles after tossing two innings. Mayson Shealy came in to relieve Azordegan and registered a strikeout in the contest. Darious Anderson finished the last three innings for the Eagles on the mound and struck out three batters. 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, March 15th against #13 Jones College in Ellisville, Miss. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 PM.
