RAYMOND, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Baseball team picked up two victories in the doubleheader sweep over Pearl River Community College. The Eagles secured the 6-3 victory in Game 1 and a 6-5 walkoff win in Game 2 at Joe G. Moss Field on Wednesday. With the sweep, the Eagles move to 18-13 overall and 6-4 in MACCC play.
GAME ONE
Evan McCarthy got the scoring started for the Eagles in the bottom of the second inning from an RBI-groundout that scored
Cameron Hill.
Elijah Thompson picked up an RBI-single on a ground ball to the shortstop that scored
Tom Lee to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage after two complete innings.
The visitors scored their first run of the ballgame in the top of the fifth inning via an error on the Eagles defense, which made the score 2-1. In the bottom half of the fifth inning,
Tyler Janos hit a 2 RBI-single to left field as
Dylan Coleman and
Clay Benson scored to extend the Eagles lead to 4-1.
The Eagles kept their foot on the accelerator and scored an additional run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead. After a scoreless seventh inning, the Wildcats plated two runs in the eighth, but Hinds got a run back in the bottom of the frame to bring the score to 5-3 going into the final inning. After a three up three down top of the ninth, the Eagles picked up the 6-3 victory over the Wildcats.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by
Elijah Thompson who went 2-4 from the plate and registered two RBI.
Tyler Janos was the other Eagle to tallied two RBI in the contest. Five additional Eagles posted a hit in the 6-3 victory over the Wildcats.
Ryan Herbison got the start on the mound for the Eagles and was stellar through 7.2 innings. Herbison totaled seven strikeouts, gave up six hits, and only posted one earned run in the game.
Alex McGarrh came in relief and pitched 1.1 innings to pick up the save. Additionally, McGarrh faced four batters and did not give up a hit to close the game.
GAME TWO
In the second game of the doubleheader it was the visitors who took the early lead with Pearl River scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.
Ashton Johnson scored the first run for the Eagles in the bottom of the first inning from a wild pitch. In the bottom of the second inning, Johnson hit a 2 RBI-single to left field as the Eagles cut the lead to 4-3.
The next three innings was a pitcher's duel as neither team scratched across a run and the score remained 4-3 going into the sixth inning. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-3.
In the top of the seventh inning with their backs against the wall,
Connor Chisolm hit a mammoth homerun to right field on the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to just one. With runners on first and second
Evan McCarthy hit a clutch single to right field to even the contest at 5-5. An errant throw from the right fielder on the same play gave the Eagles the 6-5 victory as Janos came around to score.
Connor Chisolm led the Eagles offense going 3-4 from the plate and hit the massive homerun in the seventh that started the rallyfor Hinds.
Ashton Johnson picked up a team-high two RBI in the contest from the leadoff spot. As a team, Hinds picked up 13 hits against #3 Pearl River and only committed one error in the seven-inning contest.
Lincoln Sheffield got the start on the bump for the Eagles and went 5.2 innings and struck out five batters.
John David Gunn came in relief, pitched 1.1 innings, and registered a strike out to pick up his third victory of the season.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, April 1 against the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers in Senatobia, Miss. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 PM.
