Soccer Kickoff Dinner A Success

RAYMOND, Miss. - On Friday, August 4th, the Hinds Men's and Women's Soccer teams hosted their first-ever kickoff dinner to lead into the 2023-24 season. Players' families, members of Hinds ELT, and supportive faculty joined the teams on Friday night to share a meal and meet each of the teams.

Director of Athletics Nathan Werremeyer and Hinds Foundation Executive Director Matt Jones spent a few minutes discussing the future plans for the soccer facilities at Hinds, including new concrete walkways and, eventually, a new clubhouse with locker rooms and restrooms. The guest speaker for the evening was former men's head coach Doug Williams who talked briefly about his journey through Hinds and his faith.

After the guest speaker, the audience was introduced to men's and women's soccer teams. Head Coach Robert Gardner gave a season outlook for the men while also introducing each player for this season. Following the men, Head Coach Stephen Otto introduced the women's team and talked briefly about the excitement for this upcoming year.

"This type of event is something that we hope to bring to all the sports here at Hinds," said Werremeyer. "Having the chance to highlight the student-athletes with their families while enjoying some good food is a highlight of mine," he said. Werremeyer said, "whatever we can do to make the experience better for everyone here at Hinds is something we'll try very hard to accomplish."

The soccer season kicks off this Friday as the women's team travels to Lorman to face Alcorn State at 6:00 pm and the men host Blue Mountain at home at 7:00 pm. Both matches are preseason scrimmages with the men's match in Raymond being free admission.
